Water Heating & Cooling Systems

How many times have you wanted to indulge in a warm shower only to discover that you were out of hot water? Have you tried quenching your thirst with a nice glass of cold water but instead were scalded by hot water from your kitchen faucet?
Our domestic water systems are made up of hot and cold water. Water flows to all fixtures and appliances through pipes called supply lines. But how does this mechanism function? How does the cold and hot water remain separated?

The water that comes from the main supply is already as cold and ready to be used. High-pressure pipes carry water from the municipal water system into your house, and it is then carried to your faucets and appliances via smaller water lines. Toilets, for example, use large amounts of cold water. Water filters and/or softeners may be installed into the cold water supply system, since much of a building's cold water is used for cooking and drinking. A contaminant-free water system can be further ensured by installing water filters under your sinks.

Water is heated inside your water heater. A water heater can be either gas or electric powered, and is made up of a heavy inner steel tank that is capable of holding between 40 and 60 gallons of water. Cold water is carried into the tank via a pipe connected to the main water supply. The water is slowly heated by the electric heating elements in the tank. Hot water heaters should be set for 120 to 140 degrees (F) (49 to 60 C), according to most experts. You can adjust the water temperature any time, by using the thermostat. The heated water then travels throughout your home via a series of pipes. At the base of the water heater is a drain valve. It is used for emptying the tank or for clearing accumulated sediment. For preventive maintenance, you should drain the tank every six to twelve months.
