Do It Your Self

Plumbing problems are a serious matter. A professional plumber can help you with any plumbing problem - large or small. However, you can handle and find a possible solution to some plumbing issues on your own. A do-it-yourself plumbing project can, in fact, be an exciting, cost saving venture that includes the entire family.

Not all plumbing tasks can be carried out by the home handyman. Some plumbing tasks need skill and expertise, and many of them can only be properly completed with special tools and equipment, which may not be available in the domestic plumbing kit. While do-it-yourself home plumbing generally provides short-term answers to your plumbing problem, your Los Angeles plumber can present better, more lasting ones.

There are some basic home plumbing tasks that can be handled by the "average do-it-yourselfer". Blocked sinks are the mostly encountered problems in bathroom and kitchen plumbing. You can use a plunger or remove the u-shaped section of the drain – known as the trap – located under the sink, and remove the item that is clogging the drainpipe. A plunger is also a handy tool for clearing a plugged toilet. In the case of more difficult clogs you carefully force the auger past the toilet trap and into the pipe. A leaking toilet can be fixed by checking the water level and, if it is too high, by adjusting the ballcock accordingly.

Preventative maintenance entails many methods of do-it-yourself plumbing. In order to decrease chances of future plumbing repairs, there are some basic tips that you can follow. Put strainers over kitchen and bathroom drains, and look out for the materials that should not be thrown into the sink drains or toilets.

Get to know your home plumbing system, especially the locations of your main shutoff valve and the valves located next to the various fixtures. If you find out where the shutoff valves are situated, you can quickly turn them off during an emergency and avoid flooding in your house.
