Drains

There are two parallel subsystems within a residential plumbing system; the first carries clean water into the home. The second is the drainage system, which removes wastewater from your residence. The drainage system is often called the DWV system because it has three components: drain, waste, and vent.

Vent pipes, which protrude from the roof, allow harmful sewer gases to evaporate, thereby relieving the pressure from the drain pipes as they collect water from various fixtures, thus enabling waste to flow properly. Starting out at the fixtures, drain and waste lines flow downwards as a result of gravity.
Their ultimate target is the main sewer line which, subsequently, takes waste material to a sewage facility or to a septic tank.

In addition to vents, there are a number of other ways in which dangerous gases can be released from your home. Another feature called a trap fills the same role. The curved section of drainpipes, traps can be found next to each fixture. As water from a fixture flows through the trap to the drainpipe, a small amount of water remains in the trap and acts as a seal to prevent gases and unpleasant smells from entering your home.

The material used in most drainpipes is either cast iron or plastic, or at times copper. The drainpipes should be larger than water pipes with their diameter ranging between 4 and 10 cm; this is to prevent the chances of blockages and clogs. Drainpipe sizes depend on their usage. A toilet drainpipe is 10 cm in size, shower drains have 5 cm pipes, and sinks and bathtubs are served by 4-5 cm pipes.

Unfortunately, drain clogs do happen. A good place to start looking for clogs is to examine the clean-out valves, where hair, grease, and other obstructions can accumulate.

The clean-out valves located on each drainpipe enable your expert Plumber in Los Angeles to clean it out. Ask your plumber to use his drain cleaning tools to help fix particularly stubborn clogs. Plungers, augers, snakes or sewer tapes may be used to clear up the drain. Your Los Angeles plumber can perform preventative maintenance regularly to ensure your drains remain clog free.
